Joseph Louis Camino, 56, of Braddock, was charged by a federal grand jury in connection with the assault that occurred on Monday, Dec. 16, at 1501 North 6th Street. Camino was reportedly shot multiple times by another court security officer during the incident and remains in stable condition at a local hospital, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
The indictment alleges that Camino knowingly brought a folding knife with a blade longer than 2 ½ inches into the federal courthouse intending to assault a court security officer, which he then used during the attack, United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam stated.
The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christian Haugsby and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
If convicted, Camino faces a maximum penalty of 27 years’ imprisonment, supervised release, and a fine, under federal law. The sentence will ultimately be determined by a federal judge based on sentencing guidelines and other factors.
Camino is a convicted felon for burglary, theft, robbery, and homicide, among numerous charges dating back to the late 1980s according to previous court documents.
